- Disaster Recovery Home
Next week marks one year away from Hurricane Katrina. One year away from life as we knew it. We are in another Hurricane Season - and it has seldom been mentioned here. So far we've been fortunate as it's been a quiet Season
- Eight Months Later
Meanwhile, homes have been abandoned because insurance companies refused to cover damages from the huge storm surge of Katrina. The lifestyles of many families have been decimated by homes destroyed while mortgages are still due each month on those homes. Suicides are up, divorces have increased, children show symptoms of traumatic stress disorder.
- The Weatherman
When an area is threatened with severe weather, The Weather Channel will change the programming to that regional center to highlight and report constantly on the threatening conditions.
- Hurricane Hunter in the Family
My son is a Hurricane Hunter, He doesn't have what most
would call a normal day job.
- Stay or Run?
When you see a disaster headed straight at you....your stomach re-locates itself in the general direction of your throat for days.
- Evacuation Vacuum
The day after Katrina, my Hurricane Hunter older son called to say "Mom, just think of one word -- "insurance". As a few pictures of the three Coastal counties in Mississippi started appearing on the internet, I tried to come to grips with having lost everything.
- The Kindness of Strangers
As I neared my destination I passed through several very small towns....and in every town there were people in the street collecting donations of money for victims of Hurricane Katrina!
- Coming Home
The damage more widespread and much worse than I expected. Every street has piles of "junk" sitting in front of it....washers and dryers, refrigerators, kitchen cabinets, clothing, once beautiful furniture, toys -- all of it piled with waterlogged carpeting and drywall.
- Signs of the Times
Disaster may strike....but people WILL have their say. A seldom mentioned fact of an area's recovery from a natural disaster is that there are signs everywhere!
- Federal Emergency Mismanagement Assn.
On the Mississippi Coast, newly homeless residents watched in frustration as one FEMA truck after another rolled through -- headed for New Orleans. New Orleans was in the news and everything was being sent there.
- Saving our Best Friends
After years of hurricanes, the officials in Florida know that provision must be made to rescue pets along with their people. They long ago recognized the importance of the bond between humans and their pets.
- Another Season...Already?
What we do know is that a storm not as powerful as Katrina could do serious damage on the Gulf Coast this year. There is much debris still left in our neighborhoods.
- Surviving the Recovery
After disaster comes recovery and recovery from Katrina will be slow and hard for many. Parents must view a home site where no home exists yet make mortage payments somehow each month.
